Path of Exile Return of the Ancestors Event Schedule, Rewards Guide
If you miss the days of stacking up Silver Coins, managing a roster of Karui warriors, and fundamentally breaking your passive skill tree with powerful modifiers, there is some great news. Path of Exile has just launched a three-week limited event called "Return of the Ancestors." This event revives the incredibly popular Trial of the Ancestors (TotA) auto-battler tournament mechanic, giving players another shot at running the halls of the Karui afterlife.
The event runs on the Mirage league base and introduces unique Phrecian Ascendancy Classes to shake up character building. Best of all, this is a non-voided event. Any character you level, along with all the hard-earned items and currency you accumulate, will migrate back to the parent permanent leagues once everything wraps up. It is the perfect opportunity to farm up some rare power items without feeling like your time investment will vanish into the void.
Event Schedule
The event runs concurrently across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. No matter how you prefer to play, you can jump in across Standard, Hardcore, Solo Self-Found (SSF), and Hardcore SSF variations. The calendar details are straightforward:
Start Date: June 25, 2026, at 3:00 PM PDT
End Date: July 16, 2026, at 3:00 PM PDT
Duration: Exactly 3 weeks
Tournament Mechanics & Strategy
The core loop of the event will feel instantly familiar to anyone who played during the original TotA league. You will gather Silver Coins during normal gameplay and use them to enter the Karui afterlife, where you will draft, manage, and position a team of combatants to compete in tactical auto-battler tournaments.
Every match you win hands out two distinct types of payouts. First, you get Favor, which is a temporary, tournament-only currency used to build and improve your team roster. Second, you get a "Real" Reward, which is actual loot—ranging from standard currency and rare items to the highly anticipated tattoos that you can take back to the main game.
To maximize your efficiency and win tournaments consistently, keep a few tactical pointers in mind:
Track Elimination States: A player or an NPC chieftain is permanently knocked out of the tournament after suffering two match losses. Keep an eye out for the special cross symbol next to an NPC's name. You can use this to strategically target chieftains who are close to elimination, or deliberately avoid them if you want to keep them in the bracket to farm different rewards later.
Prioritize Troops Early: When spending your hard-earned Favor in the opening rounds, buy robust, reliable Troops first. Filling out your board positions with solid warm bodies is much more impactful early on than looking for item upgrades.
Delay Troop Items: Only start investing your Favor into specialized Troop Items once your main board positions are fully filled out.
Avoid Field Supplies: It is generally best to steer clear of temporary Field Supplies. They consume valuable totem slots on your battlefield, cost precious currency, and expire quickly, giving you a very poor return on investment compared to a permanent unit.
Exclusive Rewards & The Tattoo Economy
The biggest draw of this event is undoubtedly the return of character-customization tattoos. These unique items allow you to replace standard attribute nodes on your passive skill tree with powerful, build-defining modifiers. This event features dozens of attribute-replacing passive tree modifiers, including some massive standouts:
Honoured Tattoo of the Makanga: Highly prized for defense, granting +2% to all maximum Resistances.
Honoured Tattoo of the Hunter: A massive scaling piece for green gem builds, granting +1 to the level of all Dexterity Skill Gems.
Honoured Tattoo of the Mountain: Excellent for tanky, endurance-based characters, granting +1% to maximum Fire Resistance and +1 to Maximum Endurance Charges.
In addition to these classics, the event introduces Forbidden Tattoos. These are specialized, highly impactful reward variants brought in specifically to shake up the endgame progression for this three-week run. They provide massive spikes in power and open up completely fresh ways to optimize your characters as you push deep into the league's final days.
