U4N Guide to Better POE 2 Expedition Runs After Patch Changes
Expedition has changed considerably in recent Path of Exile 2 updates, and those changes matter for anyone trying to build up POE 2 Items efficiently. The mechanic offers better opportunities than before, but it also requires more planning because reward scaling, Atlas passives, and encounter behavior have all shifted.
For players collecting POE 2 Items through high-level maps, the recent Expedition fixes are worth understanding before committing valuable Waystones. Some major performance issues have been addressed, but several bugs can still interfere with a run. At the same time, certain old farming habits are no longer effective after the latest balance adjustments.
The Biggest Performance Issues
Expedition became notorious for performance problems when large Runic monster groups appeared. Players could experience severe frame drops, long freezes, or crashes when multiple enemies and visual effects were active at the same time.
One especially annoying issue caused the game to appear frozen while displaying spinning gears for a long period. The freeze could last between 30 and 90 seconds and sometimes looked like a fake crash. Recent fixes have targeted this problem, so players should see fewer occurrences than before.
Nvidia users with device-removed crashes should also check their drivers. Grinding Gear Games worked with Nvidia to investigate a shader heap problem, and Nvidia Driver 610.88 or newer is recommended for players affected by that particular issue.
After installing a newer driver or game update, do not be surprised if the first few maps stutter. Shader caches may need to rebuild, which can temporarily make performance feel worse before it improves.
The Immortal Monster Problem
Not every Expedition issue has disappeared. The most troublesome remaining bug involves Runic monsters becoming impossible to kill.
This can happen even when the Remnant modifiers do not contain anything that should grant immunity. In other words, it is not necessarily the result of choosing the wrong modifier. The monster can simply become immune to all damage because of a mechanical or engine-related problem.
There is no reliable player-side fix when this happens. If the monster is genuinely immortal, abandoning the instance may be the only sensible option. Losing an Expedition this way is frustrating, particularly when the encounter has already been carefully prepared.
Detonators and Terrain Can Cause Problems
Another reported issue involves detonators that consume the player's action without triggering the expected explosion. Because Expedition is built around choosing a sequence of Remnants, one failed detonation can disrupt the entire encounter.
Runic sniper spiders can create another type of problem. These enemies may occasionally spawn or move into terrain where they cannot be reached. A monster stuck on a cliff might not sound serious, but it can prevent progress in a Grand Expedition if the encounter requires a full clear.
Players running completion-focused builds should therefore keep some flexibility in their expectations. Not every failed Expedition is caused by poor route planning. Sometimes the encounter itself is simply malfunctioning.
Changes to Monster Rarity
The recent patches also removed an unintended reward interaction. Grand Expeditions previously benefited from a hidden 50% increase to Monster Rarity for every Remnant completed.
That hidden bonus has been removed. If players want the increased rarity associated with this strategy now, they need to invest in the Gaining Traction Expedition Atlas passive. This makes the Atlas passive tree more important when designing a dedicated Expedition farming setup.
The change also means older guides may give misleading advice. A farming strategy that depended on the hidden rarity interaction should not be copied without checking whether its assumptions still apply.
Catalysts Are No Longer an Expedition Reward
Catalysts have also been removed from Expedition's reward pool. Tujen no longer stocks them, and players should not expect them from random Expedition chests.
Instead, Catalysts are now connected to Ultimatum encounters. This is an important distinction for players who previously used Expedition as a way to maintain a steady supply. If Catalysts are part of your crafting plan, you will need to include other content in your farming routine.
Better Route Planning
The new Expedition Atlas passive tree makes route planning more important. Underground cave entrances shown by map icons should not be ignored because these areas can contain recipes needed to unlock valuable high-tier Remnant rewards.
Liquid Verisium is another useful tool. Taking the Feeling Lucky? passive allows players to buy Liquid Verisium from Farrow. This gives them a way to force a random Runic Remnant encounter instead of relying entirely on the modifiers generated naturally on the map.
For players focused on high-value farming, Tier 15 Waystones or higher are generally the better target. Lower tiers receive penalties that make sustaining expensive high-end Expedition and Logbook strategies much harder.
Making Better Decisions With Expedition Rewards
Once you start treating Expedition as one part of a larger economy, the recent changes become easier to manage. Checking a poe 2 trade site can help you determine whether an unusual reward is worth keeping, selling, or exchanging for something more useful to your current build.
The key is not to expect every Expedition to be perfect. Performance fixes have removed some of the worst technical problems, but immortal monsters, failed detonators, and terrain issues can still happen. A flexible route, appropriate Atlas investment, and high-tier Waystones can make the mechanic much more consistent.
